Administration officials disclosed the initiation of government employee terminations on Friday, following through on prior threats in response to the ongoing US government shutdown, which is now poised to stretch into its third straight week.

Formal Statement and Initial Details

The director of the White House budget office posted on a public platform that “reductions in force have begun,” indicating the official procedure for letting employees go.

Although Vought did not specify which departments were affected, a treasury spokesperson stated that layoff warnings had been issued within that department. Additionally, a Department of Homeland Security representative indicated that staff reductions would take place at the Cybersecurity and Infrastructure Security Agency. Moreover, a union representing federal workers confirmed that members at the Department of Education would be impacted by the staff cuts.

Union Response and Court Actions

Labor representatives warned that the layoffs would have “severe consequences” on public services relied upon by the public and pledged to challenge the moves in court.

This is shameful that the administration has used the government shutdown as an excuse to wrongfully terminate thousands of workers who deliver critical services to the public across the country,” stated a national union president, representing the American Federation of Government Employees.

Political Standoff and Funding Battle

Lawmakers from the Democratic party have declined to vote for a GOP-supported bill to restore funding unless it includes healthcare-centered concessions. Following repeated failed attempts, the GOP leadership in the Senate have put the chamber in recess until the following week, indicating the standoff is not expected to be ended before then.

At a media briefing, the GOP leader in the House, Mike Johnson, blasted opposition lawmakers for not supporting the GOP proposal, which was approved in the lower chamber on a largely partisan basis.
