From Praise to Fury: Right-wing Reaction to Epstein File Disclosure is Mixed.
Right-leaning reactions to the partial release of files related to the Jeffrey Epstein case have been mixed, with certain backers of the previous administration highlighting the prominent presence of Bill Clinton and other Democrats in photographs, while different voices lamented how heavy censorship portray Donald Trump and Republicans in a negative light.
Justice Department Defends Censorship with Fervent Rhetoric
Justice Department officials defended the redactions with fervent hyperbole. “At no point in American history has a Commander-in-Chief or the Department of Justice been this open with the American people about such a delicate law enforcement issue,” stated Deputy Attorney General Todd Blanche, who issued a detailed letter describing the censorship process.
Concerns Prompted by Blacked-Out Sections
While Trump's identity and likeness appear in some of the documents, the extensive black blocks raise serious questions about what may be concealed behind them. A number of Republicans immediately demanded greater openness.
“People are raging and disengaging,” wrote Republican Representative Marjorie Taylor Greene.
In a social media post, GOP Kentucky Thomas Massie said the censorship violate the statute, and implied that a subsequent legislature may move to impeach the top law enforcement official, Pam Bondi, for that offense. “Regrettably, today’s file dump egregiously fails to adhere to both the spirit and the wording of the law,” he added.
Some Rightwing Figures Rally In Support of the Release
But, some rightwing pundits and former President allies swung firmly in support of the Justice Department's actions.
The release—from a justice department run by close Trump ally Pam Bondi—includes scores of documents that are completely censored, and many of the individuals depicted in photographs have their identities obscured.
But some do not, featuring high-profile figures like Clinton, entertainer Michael Jackson, and academic Noam Chomsky. The presence of Clinton, especially, allowed certain rightwing voices to launch the attack.
“This is quite ironic how the Democrats falsely claimed Donald Trump of associating with a sex offender, only for the administration's Justice Department to release Epstein files that show Bill Clinton swimming nude with a pedophile,” wrote conservative commentator Laura Loomer.
“Recently released documents reveal Bill Clinton shirtless in a jacuzzi with a woman that is not his wife Hillary Clinton,” wrote lawyer Rogan O’Handley. “There’s only one reason Epstein would photograph a Commander-in-Chief with a girl in a hot tub: Leverage.”
Clinton Campaign Issues Response
Bill Clinton has consistently said he was aware of zero criminal actions by Epstein and has not been accused to have participated in any misconduct. “The administration has not been hiding those documents for an extended period only to dump them late on a Friday to shield Bill Clinton,” his spokesperson Angel Ureña stated in a statement.
“The release is about shielding themselves from future revelations, or from information they will try and conceal forever. Therefore they can release as many low-quality decades-old photos as they desire, but it is not about Bill Clinton. Not previously, never will be,” the response added.
Broader Rightwing Commentary Remains Subdued
However, broader comment on the right was comparatively subdued after the release, especially when compared with the vociferous calls for transparency that preceded the congressional vote to enact a law mandating the files' publication.
Loomer, who recently secured press credentials at the Pentagon, had been one of the loudest proponents for a complete release. In February, she chastised the Justice Department broadly and Bondi specifically after a set of rightwing influencers were given physical binders of files that contained little new data.
