Individuals Discontinuing Weight-Loss Jabs Put On Weight at a Quadrupled Rate Compared to Dieters

Weight management involves ongoing approaches.

A recent study suggests that people who discontinue new slimming jabs like Mounjaro or Wegovy tend to recover reduced body mass at a significantly accelerated pace than those who stop traditional lifestyle programs.

Research printed in a major medical journal demonstrates that while overweight people can lose substantial amounts of their body weight while using the jabs, the mass is regained at an estimated rate of 0.8 kg per month after stopping.

"Individuals purchasing such drugs must be informed of the risk of rapid weight regain when the medication ends," cautioned expert Dr. Susan Jebb.

That rate of regain means a return to pre-treatment mass in about 18 months.

Weighing Treatments

The study, which looked at dozens of trials involving thousands of patients, contrasted the results of the injectable medications with older methods.

The team point out that individuals who lose weight through lifestyle changes alone generally see a less rapid weight regain—approximately 100 grams monthly—once they finish.

Explaining the Fast Rebound

Nutrition scientists propose the way of the injections is key to understanding the heightened rebound.

GLP-1 drugs imitate a body's own chemical called GLP-1, which controls appetite.

"Long-term administration of the hormone levels far above than normal might result in the body to generate a reduced amount of its endogenous hormone, and could diminish responsiveness to its effects," noted Dr. Adam Collins, a nutrition expert.

"Stopping of this hormone supplement results in appetite is uncontrolled, making binge eating far more likely."

A Lifelong Condition?

Medical guidelines recommend the injections for individuals with obesity-related health risks, alongside prescribed diet and exercise modifications.

A number of clinicians argue that, given the high risk of weight regain, the therapy might need to be long-term.

This view is reinforced by drug manufacturers, who say that the findings "underscore the chronic character of excess weight," comparing it to managing conditions like high blood pressure.

Patient Experiences

Individuals who have discontinued the medication describe a sudden resurgence of appetite.

"I experienced a trigger flipping and you become starving," said one woman.

This difficulty is worsened if individuals have not adopted sustainable dietary or behavioural modifications during therapy.

Significant Use

Recent estimates show that a significant number of people in the UK have used weight-loss jabs in the past year, with interest remaining high.

  • Use is more common among females compared to men.
  • The 40s and 50s age group shows the highest usage rates.
  • A large proportion obtain the medications through private healthcare rather than the NHS.

Finally, clinicians caution that while these medications are effective agents for weight loss, they are not a standalone fix and lasting health benefits hinges on integrated behavioural management.
