McDonald's has pulled a holiday advertisement created using generative AI following facing considerable public disapproval.

The brief spot was created via AI video tools and was first uploaded on the YouTube channel for the Dutch branch of McDonald's back on 6 December.

Viewer Criticism and Decision to Pull

Soon after it aired, viewers on social media denounced the use of AI in the film. Many called it "uncanny" and "awkwardly stitched together".

"This moment is an valuable lesson as we investigate the proper use of AI," commented a representative from McDonald's Netherlands.

The commercial was produced for McDonald's by Dutch company TBWA\Neboko and American firm The Sweetshop. It showed various things that might go awry during the Christmas break, using the tagline "not the most wonderful time of the year".

The Movement of AI in Advertising

Commercials that feature generative AI have become a increasing phenomenon among major companies, particularly for the Christmas campaign season.

  • Another beverage giant has recently launched back-to-back AI-generated holiday ads.
  • Inherent Limitations: As clips made with current AI video tools are susceptible to distort the more extended they are, the majority of AI video outputs tend to be roughly short in length.
  • Industry Concerns: The video also sparked worries about the replacement of human roles in the creative sector, with some observers noting it could reduce opportunities for actors.

Response from the Creators

After the commercial being pulled, The Sweetshop's chief executive, Melanie Bridge, defended the project.

She stated, the creation took "over a month and a half" and involved producing "numerous versions" which were then edited afterward "just as we would on any standard production".

"This wasn't just an AI gimmick," Bridge asserted. "We consider it a proper commercial."

Divisive Audience Sentiment

While the McDonald's commercial was predominantly panned, the response for some AI-generated holiday ads has been varied.

For instance, a consecutive AI-generated holiday ad from Coca-Cola according to analysis achieved a 61% "positive sentiment rating" from online commenters.

However, various brands have also received backlash for employing the technique in advertising. Luxury fashion house Valentino, for example, was lambasted for ads that some called "lazy" and "uncanny".

The episode illustrates the continuing conversation within the advertising and production sectors about the trade-off between new tools and creative integrity.
